Parentage (Paternity)

What It Is

Parentage is the process of legally identifying a child’s father when the parents are not married to each other. Unlike a divorce, there is no automatic presumption that a child born during an intimate relationship is a result of that bond.

Common Issues Addressed in a Parentage (Paternity) Action

Parentage cases only address issues related to the child of the parties. Those issues include, but are not limited to, child custody; parent-time (“visitation”); child support; health care expenses associated with the child; child care expenses for the child; and, tax exemptions associated with the child.

Do I Need a Family Lawyer?

As with a divorce, you are not required to have a lawyer represent you in a parentage case. Many of the forms required to complete a parentage case can be found online at: That being said, it is always a good idea to consult with a family lawyer regarding your legal rights and obligations before deciding whether to proceed on your own.
